Making backup copies of software that comes on low density disks to high density disks.

Frequently software for Macintosh computers will come on low density disks. While this is great for those older Macintoshes that don't have an Apple SuperDrive, it poses a problem the user who wishes to create a backup set of disks to install from. If you are networked to a LAN I'd suggest that you take a look at Installing software over an AppleShare Network, also written by myself. Otherwise follow the steps outlined below.

  1. Create a folder on the desktop of your Mac. Since we will only be using it to move software to and from the disks you can leave this folder called Untitled.
  2. Drag the closed original disk icon to the closed folder created in step 1.
  3. If the original disk is not highlighted, click on it once. Eject the original low density disk by either dragging it to the trash can or by using the Open Apple key and the letter Y. (Hold down the Open Apple like a shift key and press the letter Y key) the disk will pop out and the drive will be ready for the next disk.
  4. Open the folder created in step 1.
  5. Insert the high density destination disk into the drive, formatting it as necessary. Name this disk with the same name as the folder inside of the folder (untitled) created in step 1.
  6. Open the folder inside of the folder created in step 1 and use Edit, Select All or Open Apple and the A key to select all the items in this folder.
  7. Drag all these items to the high density destination disk created in step 5. This will copy all the items to the high density disk.
  8. If the destination disk is not highlighted, click on it once. Eject this disk by either dragging it to the trash can or by using the Open Apple key and the letter Y. (Hold down the Open Apple like a shift key and press the letter Y key.
  9. Repeat as needed for all the disks that the software comes on.
  10. Install the software from the disks that you have just created. If the installer program fails on any disk, compare that disk to the original and carefully copy over any missing files to the proper locations. If the installer fails to work check each of the new disks to ensure that they are named the same as the source disks.

On this date in 1976 the Viking 2 spacecraft lands at Utopia Planitia on Mars takes the first close-up, color photos of the planet's surface.

Teaching Tip
Create a bathroom sign-out sheet for your classroom. Use this to cut down on unnecessary trips out of the room.

Technology Tip
Can't boot from your Macintosh Hard Drive? Try booting up while holding down the command-option- shift-delete keys. With a system CD in the CD ROM drive this will cause the system to boot from the CD.
